The Portal Empty The Portal

Post by Admin Tue Mar 26, 2013 5:00 pm

During the year 3012, scientists created the much anticipated Biotechnology. It gave way to numerous discoveries in the way of science. As the years passed, these same scientists began creating Biodome Ecosystems. Plants and animals both rare and common lived in them and prospered. As time went on, the space race expanded into the entire galaxy, giving way to the discovery and use of hyper drive. Planets were discovered to be inhabited, relations with alien races began forming and trade commenced. To make travel easier, in the year 3071 Earth's scientists began the race to invent IGP. This was achieved by American Professor Joseph DuHart and Chinese Scientist Tsian Quan Xiu in the year 3082. Such a discovery led to countries vying for control over the portal, giving way to talks in the United Nations. In 3090, countries began losing patience over the talks and began to leave the United Nations, and by 3095 it was disbanded. Hostilities between countries grew until in 3097 war broke out. Nuclear bombs and biotech warfare became the predominant method for attacks, slowly decimating the surface of the Earth. Survivors began fleeing the radiation to the safety of the ecodomes, and by the year 3692 all remaining humans were living in the domes.

During the next three hundred years, the exposure to the radiation began to show as new generations of both humans and animals began to show evolutionary symptoms. Eagles grew in size as a result of being used as mail carriers until they were large enough to carry small children. Butterflies in the cocoons exposed to radiation were emerging as tiny people with wings, who were given the term Pixie over time. Sea Turtles grew to emormous sizes and were eventually used as transportation by the underwater ecodomes. The English Floating Dome inhabitants began giving birth to normal-sized children with wings. The Atlantis Underwater Domes began showing signs of gills and webbing between hands and feet. The Jungle Domes evolved with elongated ears and tails, while the Cavernous Dome evolved with night vision and became shorter with each passing generation and the small dome on top of the mountain which the Cavernous lived near grew in height until they were 20-30 feet tall. There was a single Volcanic Dome where the people there evolved with heat resistance as well as night vision and a shorter stature, and a single Plains Dome where the people evolved with longer legs, larger feet and a slimmer skeleton.

It's now the year 4001 and the APS (Air Purification Systems) are failing. The Earth's surface is uninhabitable as a result of World War 4. People have begun to whisper about the long forgotten IGP; Intergalactic Portal. It's the only hope of surviving, and there are groups forming with the intent of finding the IGP. Finding the IGP means the possibility of a new planet and a new start. However, the only clue lies in an old phrase the Cavernous Dome inhabitants use: “Down Under.”

The Portal 1175929-bigthumbnail_zpsda711634

Ryliss stood off to one side, barely listening to the Elders finish their meeting. She longed to be able to leave. To be able to go back to the waters that were as much home to her as the land she currently walked upon. Her hands flexed as she itched to feel the waters current flowing around her fingers, over her webbing and around her hands. In fact, just before the meeting she had been in the water already today, swimming among the coral whose names have long since been forgotten. Although at this particular moment she stood practically dry, which to her was a mortal offense. For in her mind no sane Uisce should be dry at any given time during the day except when one was sleeping. Now however, her hair was even nearly dry, the salt from the water drying in her hair to cause her hair to stick together and crack and flake bits of salt off when it moved.

Irritably, she shifted from one foot to the other waiting for the Elders to decide to finish their ridiculous chattering about how many, who, and where to send them first. It didn't matter to her where they sent them first for apparently they were supposed to go to all the major Domes where other groups would be waiting for them. Thankfully, she was already in the major underwater Dome and didn't have to go anywhere. She just had to wait for the others, if there were any, to show up. She sighed and took a step towards the Elders thinking to ask them if she could be excused when they finally decided they had done all they could for now. One of them turned to Ryliss and asked her to take the various letters to the turtles to send onward to the various Domes; all of the Domes having some connection to water so they could all contact each other.

Nodding in what she hoped was a solemn agreement, Ryliss had to force herself to walk out of the hall so she wouldn't be considered rude. It absolutely would not do to anger the Elders. Once out of sight however, her long legs broke into a run as she hurried to the water where she could get rid of the terrible drying feeling. How she hated that feeling! Buildings and people whipped by her as she ran, paying them no mind but careful not to run headlong into anyone. At that moment the salt in her hair decided that it was sick of being bound up in her braid, and chose that moment to start coming free of the strands of hair to fly into the faces of everyone unfortunate enough to be facing the way Ryliss ran. Curses reached her ears as she raced the remaining length of pathway to the water where the turtles waited eagerly for something to do.

Stopping, she bent over pressing a hand to a slight stitch in her side to catch her breath. Once she was certain she could speak without panting, she knelt before the turtles and handed them all the notes for them to take in their mouths. "These are to go to the Domes. It's important." She knew that the word 'important' would keep the silly turtles to their task. "You make sure those aren't late, you hear me? Off with you now." Turning, the turtles each swam off heading in their respective directions to the other Domes. Smiling to herself, Ryliss slipped into the water where her legs kicked happily in the water as she sat on the edge of the walkway. All she had to do now was wait. That wasn't so hard. Especially since she had the water.
